Canadian News Network Reveals that Probiotics Can Ease Some of the Signs of C.F.S.

A CTV News story on a U of T Research Study reported that a daily dosage of a probiotic supplement each day has been seen to help symptoms of anxiety in people who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This information came out of a U of T research team working with A. Venket Rao, based on a 2 month study that found a significant fall off in the subject's symptoms of anxiety.

First as a starter, for those who are not normally interested in natural health supplements, What is a probiotic? At its most basic it's a natural health product that contains living - such as Lactobacillus or Bifidobacteria. RGarden's L. Salivarius is one such product that will help to sustain the good bacteria that are found in all of us. This bacteria in the digestive tract , boosts our immune system and crowds out bad bacteria.

But one thing the U of T. team of researchers were most excited to discover was that, this two month program of daily probiotics supplementation also achieved positive results in managing disorders like depression & anxiety. Unlike medicines, which can bring about a host of unwanted side effects, probiotics are an easy and safe way to manage these issues. They have published their findings in the journal BioMed Central.

Their study was conducted on people suffering from C.F.S. which exhibits other symptoms such as persistent fatigue and for a large group - sleep difficulties, depression & anxiety.

Perhaps what led them to look at probiotics at all was that subjects with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are also frequently affected with digestive disorders frequently connected with the decreased presence of good bacteria in the body. Natural health advocates have used probotics to aid digestion for a long time. Because the desirable bacteria present in the probiotic supplements will help the body crowd out the toxic bacteria in the body and this bad bacteria has already been connected with an increase in depression and other mood problems, the researchers think that bacteria levels may influence our behavior.

The group given probiotics regularly showed higher levels of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria and this correlated with a significant reduction in anxiety feelings in the group. They also showed digestive improvements such as a decrease in bloating, gas and inflammation.

"The findings are huge," said study co-author Alison C. Bested, who continued state that the research participants felt calmer and were better able to deal with their illness, slept better and exhibited fewer symptoms of anxiety.
